Shell turns again to GATE for GoM Sparta commissioning

Shell Offshore Inc. has awarded GATE Energy a commissioning management and execution contract for its new Sparta field semisubmersible platform in the US Gulf of Mexico (GoM).
Seatrium was awarded a contract in January by Shell Offshore to construct and integrate the hull, topsides and living quarters of the Sparta semisubmersible FPU.

GATE provides full project life-cycle support services from conception through commissioning.
President of Commissioning Mark Myhre said the company had applied this model to multiple previous projects, including Shell’s Vito and Whale developments.
Sparta's design is very similar to the 100,000-bbl/d Vito and Whale designs. This will be the first of Shell's replicable projects to feature all-electric topside compression equipment to reduce carbon emissions from operations.
