DALLAS — In the U.S. Gulf of Mexico (GoM), drilling continues on the Kodiak sidetrack well, with production anticipated this summer. The Winterfell-2 appraisal well encountered about 40 m (131 ft) of net oil pay in the first and second horizons, with better than anticipated oil saturation and porosity.
The exploration tail discovered an additional oil-bearing horizon in a deeper reservoir, which is also prospective in the blocks immediately to the north. Kosmos now estimates the resource potential in the central Winterfell area at about100 MMbbl. The company and its partners are working on a low-cost development and are targeting sanction around mid-year, with first oil to follow 18 months later.
Also during the first quarter, Kosmos paid $10 million to acquire an additional 5.5% interest in the Winterfell Field from Red Willow, raising its stake in the four central Winterfell blocks to about 22%. The company also has a 36.5% interest in the two blocks to the north of the Winterfell discovery.
