Offshore Elgol gas find may not be economic to develop
Jan. 17, 2025
Vår Energi has discovered gas in the Elgol prospect in the Barents Sea, but the find may be sub-commercial, according to the Norwegian Offshore Directorate.
The Norwegian Energy Ministry has offered 20 E&P companies interests in 53 production licenses under Norway’s 2024 pre-defined areas (APA) offshore leasing round.
The COSL Prospector semisubmersible rig drilled well 7122/9-2, the first on production license 1131, in 415 m water depth.
The well encountered a 1.5-m gas column in a sandstone reservoir in the Ørret Formation in Upper Permian reservoir rocks. It has since been plugged and abandoned.
Initial analysis indicated 2.6 MMboe to 19 MMboe recoverable.
Elgol is part of Vår Energi’s ongoing exploration campaign in the Barents Sea, which will continue throughout this year and in 2026. The next well will be 7122/8-3 S on the Zagato prospect.
