ABERDEEN, UK  The Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC) and the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) are working on an initiative to overhaul the way asset operators on the UK Continental Shelf measure and monitor their facilities’ emissions.

The main goal is to formulate a roadmap of current and future technologies, providing operators with the solutions they require to produce accurate emission baselines and support implementation of emissions reduction strategies.

It will also assist the development of North Sea licensees’ Emissions Reduction Action Plans (ERAPs), in which they explain their planned investments and projects for reducing operational emissions.

The roadmap will include factors such as the readiness of technologies, modification requirements and likely implementation costs, helping operators move away from use of predictive modelling, estimations and calculations, as these may not deliver accurate emissions data, the NSTA said.

NZTC COO Rebecca Allison said, "The roadmap will be a vital resource for operators of both fixed and floating installations and onshore terminals. They will be able to identify the readiness of different technologies and understand the specific measurement and monitoring requirements unique to their operations.”

NSTA CTO Carlo Procaccini added, "Since different operators have different emissions profiles, it is essential for each asset operator to accurately measure and monitor emissions such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and methane. Leveraging technology will significantly help to reduce emissions and promote sustainable practices across both onshore and offshore operations.”

The roadmap should be published in September.
