PARIS, France—TotalEnergies has signed a memorandum of understanding with Holcim to collaborate on decarbonization of a cement production plant in Obourg, Belgium undergoing an upgrade.
They will assess various energies and technologies for the capture and storage of about 1.3 MMt per year of CO2 emitted by the facility.
Options include a new air-oxyfuel switchable kiln to facilitate capture and purification of CO2 in the flue gases as well as transportation and use of the captured CO2 by TotalEnergies for an e-fuel producing scheme and/or storage in a North Sea reservoir.
TotalEnergies will consider potential renewable projects to power a new electrolyzer, which would generate the green hydrogen needed to produce e-fuels. The renewable energy produced would also power Holcim’s new oxyfuel kiln, while oxygen emitted by the electrolyzer could provide fuel for the kiln.
