ABERDEEN, U.K.  Exceed and Mermaid Subsea Services UK will jointly perform a plug and abandonment (P&A) campaign this summer for multiple operators in the U.K. North Sea.

It will be Exceed’s largest scale vessel-based well P&A program to date, and it will represent Mermaid’s entry into the North Sea market.

The schedule covers decommissioning of 10 exploration and appraisal wells across the U.K. North Sea northern, central and southern areas.

“New contracting models are critical to achieving the decommissioning cost-reduction target set by the North Sea Transition Authority [NSTA]," said Scott Cormack, Mermaid operations director. “However, the NSTA reported in 2021 that these models were yet to become the norm and that a lack of collaboration was, in part, responsible.

“Our aim is to help address that situation, not only through our own collaboration with Exceed, but also by encouraging operators to consider the benefits of a lump sum, campaign approach to decommissioning.”

John Anderson, Exceed’s commercial director, said the partnership offers “a turnkey well P&A service, which provides not only the technical downhole capabilities but also complete control over vessel schedules."

This allows them to optimize timings to allow for multi-operator campaigns.

"With mobilization/demobilization accounting for a third of the total well P&A cost, this approach makes good economic sense as well as minimizing the environmental impact of multiple, separate campaigns," Anderson added.
