Petrobras, Shell awarded 29 offshore blocks under Brazil bid round

Petrobras has acquired 29 blocks in the Pelotas Basin offshore southeast Brazil under the ANP’s 4th Permanent Concession Offer Cycle.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Petrobras has acquired 29 blocks in the Pelotas Basin offshore southeast Brazil under the ANP’s 4th Permanent Concession Offer Cycle.

The company will operate blocks P-M-1739, P-M-1737 and P-M-1797 with a 50% interest, in partnership with Shell (30%) and CNOOC.

And in partnership with Shell alone, Petrobras will operate blocks P-M-1277, P-M-1279, P-M-1281, P-M-1361, P-M-1363, P-M-1441, P-M-1443, P-M-1357, P-M-1359, P-M-1439, P-M-1516, P-M-1518, P-M-1595, P-M-1597, P-M-1793, P-M-1795, P-M-1838, P-M-1840, P-M-1520, P-M-1522, P-M-1599, P-M-1674, P-M-1676, P-M-1678, P-M-1743, P-M-1799 with a 70% stake, with Shell holding the remaining 30%.

Petrobras’ signature bonus, to be paid in April 2024 by the company, is about R$116 million. The partners’ proposed minimum exploratory program was another factor in the awards, the company added.

A total of 193 blocks were auctioned in Brazil’s Dec. 13 oil and gas licensing round, 192 under concession and one under production sharing agreement, "signaling strong optimism for the industry," according to Wood Mackenzie. 

The total amount in bonuses was US$85 million.

bp, Equinor, Karoon and CNOOC will operate blocks in the Santos Basin, while in the Pelotas Basin, Petrobras will operate 29 blocks, as stated above, and Chevron acquired 15 blocks.

Brazilian operator Elysian acquired 122 onshore blocks.
