OSLO, Norway – The Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has submitted impact assessments for petroleum activity in two regions offshore northern Norway.

These cover areas around Jan Mayen, between Norway and Iceland, and in the southeastern part of the Barents Sea. Both are out for consultation over the next three months concerning the technical work performed.

The impact assessments are part of the opening process for exploration and development in both areas. In both cases, geological mapping will also be conducted.

Depending on the outcome of these programs, the government aims to submit a White Paper to Norway’s parliament (Storting) recommending opening of both areas for petroleum activity.
