Dana Petroleum has suspended production at the Triton FPSO, located in the central UK North Sea, following damage caused by a storm last month, according to partner Serica Energy.

When the storm hit on Jan. 24, sea spray triggered the fire and gas detection system and an automatic production shutdown. Although operations were able to restart four days later, inspections revealed minor damage to one of the cargo tanks, which needed to be repaired.

While preparing for this program, Dana’s team identified an integrity issue with a coupling in the inert gas line used to purge the tanks ahead of the repairs.

According to Serica Energy, a partner in the Triton area fields cluster, the vessel remains offline pending identification of the cause of the issue and the best method of resolution.

Currently, Serica sees production resuming in mid- to late March. In parallel, work on the vessel’s second gas compressor should be available by the end of March.

The Triton joint venture partners have just received the final draft of a third-party engineering study assessing the workscope required for extending the life of the FPSO, based on a range of cessation of production dates up to 2040.

The findings confirm that the vessel could produce into the 2030s, subject to continued maintenance and upgrades.

Serica CEO Chris Cox said the impact of the storm was frustrating.

“Recent drilling results illustrate the significant value of proven hydrocarbons in the Triton area," he added. “We will continue working with the operator and discussing with them at the highest level all options to secure a lasting improvement in the operating performance of the FPSO.”
