Equatorial Guinea’s state oil company GEPetrol has a multi-phase development plan to extend production from the Zafiro Field in offshore Block B, according to the African Energy Chamber.

As the new operator, the company plans three phases. Phase 1 will be implemented at the start of 2025, involving re-connecting selected wells that previously produced via tiebacks to the Zafiro Producer floating production unit (FPU). Previous operator Exxon Mobil had to halt production in 2022 due to water entering the FPU.

The second phase, conducted in parallel to the first phase, entails well production and cost optimization measures. Phase 3, from 2025 onward, will involve a redevelopment of the Zafiro Field, which started production in 1996.

GEPetrol assumed operatorship of Block B this year following the expiry of Exxon Mobil’s production sharing contract with the government. In April 2024, GEPetrol awarded Petrofac a five-year, $350-million technical contract for services related to onshore support bases, an FPSO and a platform at the Zafiro Field.
