CALGARY, Canada – Suncor Energy is assessing options for returning the Terra Nova field FPSO to normal operations offshore Newfoundland and Labrador.

During 2Q, the company took the decision to disconnect the vessel, currently docked shoreside in Newfoundland, over COVID-19 concerns. In 4Q 2019, production from the field had had to be shut in following a regulatory order.

Suncor’s present review is also related to its Terra Nova Asset Life Extension project. This requires approval from the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.

The shut-in caused the company’s 2Q production globally to decline by more than 10,000 boe/d to 101,800 boe/d, another factor being and unplanned maintenance and natural declines at Suncor’s UK North Sea fields.

This decrease was partially offset by higher production at the ExxonMobil-operated Hebron field off Newfoundland, where seven new production wells have come online since 2Q 2019, and by a ramp-up in production from the Spirit Energy-operated Oda field in the southern Norwegian North Sea.
