LONDONOil and Gas UK has responded to the German Energy Regulator’s decision to temporarily suspend certification of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, designed to take gas from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea.

The UK association said the development, along with Britain’s recent issues with gas supplies and gasoline shortages, underlined the need for the UK to safeguard its energy security through continued domestic production of offshore oil and gas.

OGUK Sustainability Director Mike Tholen pointed out that 85% of homes in Britain are heated by natural gas, “so if we halted our own production we’d simply need to import it from around the world at a huge cost to the taxpayer, jobs, and increased carbon footprint.

“Being reliant on our energy from Qatar, Russia and other countries, also leaves us more vulnerable to energy cut-outs and price spikes.”
