Successful application of mono-diameter drilling technology is making this drilling approach more widely accepted. Chimaobi Jordan, a student at the University of Technology in Owerri, Nigeria, presented his views on mono-diameter drilling at the Offshore West Africa conference in Abuja.

The main goal for operators is to achieve their drilling objective safely at the lowest cost, Jordan said. "This technology reduces cost."

One major savings is in casing cost. According to Jordan, "50% of drilling cost is casing string."

There are other benefits from the new technology, Jordan said. These include the use of less expensive rigs, standardized equipment, and cement volume handling.

Mono-diameter drilling means less space taken up on the drill floor, a higher rate of penetration, and less time spent achieving the drilling objective, according to Jordan.

"The cost per foot drilled is about half that of a conventional system," Jordan said.
