PTTEP has developed the PTTEP Ocean Data Platform to collect marine science data offshore Thailand.
According to the company, this is the first time an offshore petroleum platform in the country has been adapted for this purpose.
Under a collaboration with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Hydro-Informatics Institute and Kasetsart University, the program is compiling meteorological and oceanographic data such as air temperature, wind direction, water temperature and ocean current mapping.
The Ocean Data Platform also details the level of microplastics level nearby and monitors/identifies aquatic species around the jackets of petroleum platforms to help preserve biodiversity.
Collected data, PTTEP added, can be used to enhance ocean mathematical models to predict marine debris dispersion, and ocean current patterns affecting coral breaching and recovery.
