LEIDSCHENDAM, the NetherlandsFugro’s self-elevating platform Amberjack has arrived in Japan, where it will be deployed for offshore wind geotechnical projects.

Under Japanese regulations, the company explained that fieldwork procedures for vessels registered in the country are more straightforward than for foreign-flagged vessels. This should help Fugro speed up mobilization to offshore project sites for collection of geodata.

Amberjack, which was re-flagged last December, is now based in Tokyo. It will be available for programs involving geotechnical borehole drilling, sampling and in-situ investigations such as downhole cone penetration tests and standard penetration tests.

The vessel can also perform downhole geophysical logging for preliminary and detailed geotechnical and cable route surveys, in compliance with international and Japanese geotechnical standards down to a maximum water depth of 42 m.

Junichi Kuwamura, Fugro’s country manager for Japan, said, “The Japanese government targets 10 GW of offshore wind developments by 2030 and 30 GW to 45 GW by 2040.”
