HOUSTON – ION Geophysical Corp. has started a 2D multi-client reimaging program off the Pacific coast of Central America.
The Maya Reprocessing program covers ~9,000 km (5,592 mi) of data that extend from the Tehuantepec basin of southern Mexico to the Sandino basin of western Nicaragua into the Chorotega Forearc.
The program will deliver a calibrated regional data set largely covering underexplored open acreage, which, according to the company, has not seen any exploration drilling activity in 40 years.
Prior exploration well results indicate the presence of an active petroleum system in the Pacific forearc basins. Legacy data identify the presence of a 50-km (31-mi) wide along-strike basin with sediment thicknesses ranging up to 9 km (6 mi). Five primary tectono-stratigraphic sequences host Turonian-Campanian source rocks that may be charging sandstone and carbonate reservoirs along the margin.
The program is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
