KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Petronas and CGG have initiated a multiclient 2D seismic survey to the north of the Straits of Melaka.

This is designed to investigate and map the hydrocarbon potential in open blocks PM320 and PM321 of the Langkasuka Basin ahead of the planned Malaysia 2024 bid round.

Acquisition of the Selat Melaka survey, over a 38,000-sq-km plus area, started last month and should complete in late December. It should deliver 8,000 km of new 2D data that will support future exploration of pre-Tertiary targets.

Azmir Zamri, senior general manager of Resource Exploration MPM, said, “Our recent study of the Langkasuka Basin indicates hydrocarbon potential in the untested deeper pre-Tertiary formation…"

CGG expects to deliver early results next month and final products next August. The team at its Kuala Lumpur subsurface imaging center will apply latest proprietary full-waveform inversion (FWI) and Q-tomography imaging technologies to improve regional understanding of the petroleum systems in the little explored basin, with a focus on the pre-tertiary.

Dechun Lin, CGG's executive vice president, Earth Data, said the project “will further assist frontier exploration in the West Peninsular area.”
