OSLO, Norway  Troika International is working on an updated reporting format for seismic data on the Norwegian Continental Shelf under a contract awarded by Diskos and the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD).

"The Segy rev. 2 format will make it possible to automate seismic reporting to a far greater extent. It will also be easier for users to convert the format to their desired use format," said Petter Dischington, responsible for the project at the NPD.

The current Segy format dates from the 1970s, and it is said to have limitations that make it difficult to store the much larger volumes of seismic data now acquired. Also, the format's machine readability is said to be in need of improvement.

Norway will be one of the first countries to utilize Segy rev. 2, with the project due to be completed in first-quarter 2023. This should form the basis for further updates to the reporting regulations for seismic data, the NPD added.
