LONDON – Shell has reaffirmed to partner Deltic Energy and the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) its commitment to drilling the Pensacola gas prospect in the UK southern North Sea in late 2021.

According to Deltic, the well on license P2252 could be a potential play-opener. Well design work is under way.

Processing has finished of the 3D seismic acquired over the license last year, with interpretations of the data confirming a strong image over Pensacola.

The presence of chalk has also been detected at the seabed in a small section in the north of the seismic dataset. Although this is thought to have no material impact on the reservoir, more intensive seismic processing is needed to improve image resolution.

In response, the OGA has agreed to extend the date by which the contingent well commitment becomes firm until March 31, 2021.

Shell’s additional processing should further de-risk Pensacola and improve definition of the range of potential volumes and the optimum well location. The company will continue to carry 100% of Deltic’s costs until the well investment decision has been taken.
