MDL manages reel-lay system deployments for offshore Gabon field overhaul

ABERDEEN, UK — Maritime Developments Ltd (MDL) has been supporting DOF Subsea for a field redevelopment program offshore Gabon.
The company mobilized a flex-lay spread, comprising a horizontal lay system (HLS) with TTS-4/140 Series tensioner and a Generation 3 reel drive system (RDS), onto the Skandi Constructor.
MDL’s scope covered recovery and installation of umbilicals and flexibles as part of the campaign to replace an FPSO with an FSO on the Etame Field. Flexible products were handled through the vessel’s moonpool, enabled by the HLS.
According to the company, the system ensured efficient mid-line connections by allowing safe and convenient hang-off for the products’ end terminations.
MDL’s track and cradle system was used for handling and transit of the four reels. Integration of reel cradles and lashing points within the RDS track system in turn supported fast mob/demobilization of the reels, as it eliminated the need or welding down cradles and reduced the requirement for pad eyes on the vessel’s deck.
The RDS was used to sea-fasten the first reel, without the need for lashings. MDL also undertook the sea-fastening design for the client’s back deck and provided all sea-fastening materials and fabrication support.
Euan Crichton, project manager at MDL said, “The HLS, tensioner and Generation 3 RDS make up a highly capable spread, enabling multi-reel installations over the moonpool, which was the only lay option available on this back deck due to the space constraints.
“We are continuing our support to DOF in various global locations, configuring bespoke equipment spreads suitable to their vessels.”
