TOKYO – SKK Migas has approved the plan of development for the offshore Ubadari field and the offshore Vorwata field carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) development, in connection with the Tangguh LNG project in Papua Barat, Indonesia.
The development will recover potentially an additional 1.3 tcf of gas from Ubadari and Vorwata.
Development of Ubadari will be fast-tracked following a successful appraisal campaign, with production via normally unmanned installations connected to an offshore pipeline to Tangguh.
Vorwata’s CCUS development will involve re-injecting around 25 MM tons of CO2 into the reservoir to eliminate carbon venting and provide incremental gas production through enhanced gas recovery.
CO2 injection should remove up to 90% of the reservoir-associated CO2, currently accounting for almost half of the Tangguh LNG emissions.
FEED for both schemes will start in mid-2022 subject to approval from the Tangguh partners and further SKK Migas approval, with start-up slated for 2026 pending a final investment decision.
The Tangguh LNG project in Papua Barat province is operated by bp Berau, in partnership with MI Berau, CNOOC Muturi, Nippon Oil Exploration (Berau), KG Berau Petroleum, Indonesia Natural Gas Resources Muturi, and KG Wiriagar Petroleum.
Tangguh (offshore) is currently Indonesia’s largest gas-producing field supplying 1.4 bcf/d to two LNG trains. Production will climb to 2.1 bcf/d once the new Train 3 comes onstream.
