ZAMUDIO, Spain – Dominion Energy and Hai Long have both conditionally selected Siemens Gamesa’s latest offshore wind turbine for their respective wind projects off Virginia and Taiwan.
The company will supply SG 14-222 Direct Drive offshore wind turbines to the 2.640-GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) commercial project. The exact quantity of turbines to be deployed is subject to final project site conditions. All turbine installations are expected to be completed by 2026. The agreement is subject to certain conditions including Dominion Energy’s final investment decision, governmental permitting, and other required approvals.
Siemens Gamesa was named as the preferred turbine supplier for the CVOW commercial project in January 2020.
The company said it continues to work with local stakeholders to investigate a potential blade manufacturing facility for these turbines on the East Coast, potentially the first facility custom-built to manufacture components for the SG 14-222. Decisions on sourcing and supply chain to serve the US market are expected to be made within the next year.
Dominion Energy’s commercial offshore wind project expands on knowledge gained though the two-turbine,12-MW CVOW pilot project which will be installed within a research lease area adjacent to site of the 2.6-GW commercial project. It is the first offshore wind project to be built in US federal waters and will use the company’s 6-MW SWT-6.0-154 wind turbines. The pilot project is set to be online later this year.
The SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine is also expected to be used at the 300-MW Hai Long 2 project in Taiwan.
The exact number of units for the first 300 MW of the project remains to be confirmed based on site-specific conditions. The preferred supplier agreement as published in November 2019 remains subject to contract and final investment decision from the consortium partners, Canadian independent power producer Northland Power Inc. and Taiwan-based developer Yushan Energy, jointly owned by Mitsui & Co., Ltd. in Japan and Yushan Energy Pte. Ltd. in Singapore.
The Hai Long offshore wind power plant was awarded through the 2018 grid allocation mechanism in Taiwan. The project site is about 50 km (31 mi) off the coast of Changhua County. The first 300 MW will serve as an anchor for Siemens Gamesa to expand its local footprint and supply base in Taiwan into a regional industrial hub.
