Tangguh partners in Indonesia sanction carbon capture, compression project
bp and its partners announced on Nov. 22 a final investment decision (FID) on the $7 billion Tangguh Ubadari, CCUS, Compression project (UCC) offshore and onshore Papua Barat, Indonesia.
The UCC project involves development of the offshore Ubadari gas field development, enhanced gas recovery through carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) and onshore compression. It will make use of and expand existing infrastructure at the onshore Tangguh LNG complex.
Production from Ubadari, with prospective resources of about 3 Tcf, should start in 2028; plans call for three injection wells, one offshore injection platform, one offshore CO2 pipeline, and facilities onshore for CO2 removal, processing and compression.
According to bp, this will be Indonesia’s first CCUS project developed at scale, potentially sequestering about 15 MM metric tons of CO2 from Tangguh’s emissions during the initial phase.
Last year a third LNG train began operating at the onshore complex.
Other partners are MI Berau, CNOOC Muturi, Nippon Oil Exploration (Berau), KG Berau Petroleum, KG Wiriagar Petroleum, and Indonesia Natural Gas Resources Muturi.
