OSLO, Norway — Ammonia producer Yara International has signed a binding commercial agreement with the Northern Lights CO2 transport and storage joint venture.

This will involve annual liquefaction of 800,000 t of emissions from process gas from the ammonia plant at Yara Sluiskil in the Netherlands for shipment to permanent storage on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, 2.6 km beneath the seabed in the North Sea.

According to Yara, the annual deliveries will be equivalent to 0.5% of the Netherlands’ total emissions in 2022. Over the next 15 years, the company expects to remove about 12 MMt of CO2 from its production in Sluiskil.

The liquefied CO2 will be shipped to Øygarden for storage in onshore tanks prior to onward transport via a subsea pipeline for injection to the offshore saline aquifer.

Operations will start in 2025 and continue for 15 years.
