OSLO, Norway – Equinor has discovered more gas with its latest exploration well in the Barents Sea.
ThesemisubmersibleWest Hercules drilled well 7324/3-1 in PL615 in 452 m (1,483 ft) water depth, 15 km (9.3 mi) northwest of the Atlantis discovery (another gas accumulation) and 370 km (230 mi) north of Hammerfest.
According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD), Equinor had hoped to prove oil in the primary target, Late Triassic reservoir rocks in the upper Snadd formation. But the outcome was a 30-m (98.4-ft) total gas column of which 20 m (65.6 ft) was of moderate to poor reservoir quality.
In the secondary target in the lower Snadd formation, more gas was encountered but the size of the column could not be clarified due to the tight formation.
The NPD estimates total reserves in the range of 11-24 bcm recoverable but added that profitability was unclear.
TheWest Hercules will next drill appraisal well 7122/7-7 S on the Goliat field in Barents Sea license 229 for Eni Norge.
