NEW YORK – BP has terminated the Aspy exploration well, 330 km (205 mi) southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, after failing to find commercial quantities of hydrocarbons.

According to partner Hess, the well, drilled by the semisubmersibleWest Aquarius in 2,777 m (9,111 ft) water depth, reached a TD of 7,400 m (24,278 ft).

Drilling started originally on April 22, but was interrupted two months later a leak of synthetic-based mud was detected in the drilling fluid system, 30 m (98.4 ft) below the sea surface.

BP received clearance to resume operations on July 23, when it began drilling a side track well (Aspy D-11A) from the same surface location and wellhead, with the lower portion of the original wellbore being cemented and plugged.
