STAVANGER , Norway -- BG Norge has proven oil with a wildcat well in the Norwegian North Sea, 25 km (15.5 mi) northeast of Snorre field.

The main objective of the well (34/5-1 S), drilled by the semisub Borgland Dolphin in 387 m (1,269 ft) of water, was to prove petroleum in Lower Jurassic reservoir rocks (the Cook formation). The secondary exploration target was to prove petroleum in Lower Jurassic to Upper Triassic reservoir rocks (the Statfjord formation).

Oil was encountered in the Cook formation, but the Statfjord formation was dry. BG and its partners Premier Oil, Wintershall and Petoro plan to drill a side-track from the well (34/5-1 A) to appraise potential resources.
The well was not formation-tested, but extensive data acquisition and sampling were conducted.

This was the first exploration well in production license 374 S, awarded in the APA 2005 licensing round.
