Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd discovered oil in the basement of the Anding Utara-1 exploration well drilled within the Southern Malay basin offshore Terengganu. It is the first such discovery in Malaysia.

The well and its sidetrack both tested oil and gas in the basement, the deepest layer of a hydrocarbon prospect usually devoid of potential. The well was drilled to 2,610 m TD, including 120 m TVD into the basement. The sidetrack well reached 2,740 m TD, drilling 250 m into the basement. The well is in the Malong-Sotong-Anding Production sub-block of block PM12.

Petronas Carigali has completed conventional testing of the wells and is evaluating the potential of this discovery.
