HOUSTON – The damaged BOP from the BP Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico is in the hands of the federal investigators and a replacement BOP is in place.
The damaged BOP and the lower marine riser were raised slowly and separated onboard the Q4000. The Development Driller II then moved over the well and installed a new BOP. None of these operations caused any release of hydrocarbons, said US Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, national incident commander.
“We're taking not only the control of the source, but to also take the final steps to plug and abandon, Allen said. Relief well drilling is expected to continue this week, and the bottom kill remains in the plans.
