KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Sabah Shell Petroleum and its partners have taken a final investment decision on Phase 4 of the Gumusut-Kakap-Geronggong-Jagus East deepwater development.
The Gumusut-Kakap semisubmersible FPSO is stationed off the coast of Sabah, Malaysia. GKGJE Phase 4, as subsea tieback project, involves drilling and connecting four new wells to the platform, with first oil expected by late 2024.
The development is in water depths of up to 1,200 m.
Shell also revealed that Phase 3 started producing oil July 31, via two new oil producer wells and two new water injectors.
The co-venturers are Shell Sabah Selatan, ConocoPhillips Sabah, PETRONAS Carigali, PTTEP Sabah Oil and PT PERTAMINA Malaysia Eksplorasi Produks.
Petronas said when the four new wells are fully completed in first-quarter 2023, they should add about 25,000 bbl/d to the existing production capacity.
Mohamed Firouz Asnan, the company’s senior vice president of Malaysia Petroleum Management, said, “Whilst the shallow inboard areas continue to underpin the country’s production, the future lies in the deepwater plays, which makes up a quarter of our offshore acreages."
