Mermaid Subsea Services (UK) has completed the first stage of a North Sea decommissioning contract for Shell UK.

The initial phase of the multi-year campaign involved removing wellheads and protection covers, which were then taken ashore for disposal.

Under the next phase, due to start next year, Mermaid will deploy tools to retrieve wellhead flow base structures, followed in 2026 by wellhead severance and recovery operations.

Following each stage, the company will clear and remove associated debris from the seabed and perform over-trawl surveys where needed. All recovered materials from the various structures will be handled to maximize potential for reuse or recycling.
