FORNEBU, Norway — Aker Solutions has toppled the decommissioned topsides from the Repsol-operated Gyda Field platform in the southern Norwegian North Sea.
Gyda produced from 1990 until its shutdown in the fall of 2021. In summer 2022, Allseas’ Pioneering Spirit removed the 18,000-t topsides and transported it to Aker Solutions’ Stord yard in western Norway.
The yard has since dismantled and recycled Gyda’s drilling and flare towers and associated waste.
The controlled demolition of the topside was the facility’s largest to date using explosives and pulling power. Once taken down, large cutting machines and stationary shears chop up the steel structures and cuttings for subsequent sorting, followed by shipping for re-melting and possible use as additives.
Aker Solutions’ decommissioning service includes preparing a Second Life Report detailing the recoverable raw materials from platform jackets, topsides and other retired energy infrastructure. These can include aluminum for bridges, steel for girders, reusable generators, pumps, and fire-suppressors.
