PARIS, France — TotalEnergies and its co-venturers in the Papua LNG project have initiated first-phase FEED studies for the upstream production facilities.
Gas from the onshore Antelope and Elk fields in southeastern Papua New Guinea will be exported through an onshore/offshore pipeline system to the PNG LNG plant north of the capital Port Moresby, operated by ExxonMobil.
Studies are progressing in parallel for the downstream liquefaction facilities, with a view to launching the integrated FEED process during fourth-quarter 2022.
The partners aim to take a final investment decision around the end of 2023 and to achieve startup at year-end 2027.
Julien Pouget, TotalEnergies senior vice president of Asia-Pacific for Exploration & Production and Renewables, said the project would increase Papua New Guinea’s LNG export capacity.
“The Papua LNG project is well positioned to contribute to growth in LNG supply worldwide, especially for customers in Asia seeking to decarbonize from coal to gas, in line with our strategy to lower global greenhouse gas emissions,” Pouget said.
The development will include carbon capture and storage scheme for the fields' native CO2, which will be reinjected into the reservoirs.
