DISS, UK – SafeSTS has introduced a new ship-to-ship cargo transfer system for dynamically positioned shuttle tankers.

According to the company, these vessels have traditionally operated solely in DP mode to load oil from FPSOs, with subsequent transfer to export tankers taking place in side-by-side ship-to-ship transfers.

SafeSTS’ Transfer via Buoy Terminal (TVB) is designed to allow export tankers to load or discharge at a single point mooring (SPM) terminal, with shuttle tankers discharging in DP mode while remaining at a pre-determined distance of around 150 m (492 ft) from the export tanker.

During squalls or other environmental events, system stability is provided by the export tanker hold-back tug, while the DP shuttle tanker independently holds station in relation to the export tanker.

The TVB has no subsea structure aside from anchors and chains. Its dual-carcass floating hoses containing the oil are claimed to be always visible on the sea surface, so regular maintenance and inspection can be performed without the need for specialist underwater personnel and equipment.

In addition, the TVB can accommodate 20 operations per month. VLCC tankers need only moor once to the TVB Terminal, followed by loading by multiple DP shuttle tankers with various sizes of cargo.

Not all DP shuttle tankers can discharge through the bow loading system, so SafeSTS, in co-operation with Gall Thomson, has developed the PTX emergency release system which can be integrated into a vessel’s emergency shutdown system.

This is said to facilitate discharge or load through a vessel’s standard manifold in DP mode.

SafeSTS chief executive Yvonne Gilchrist-Mason said: “Whilst the system is primarily aimed at existing markets, the concept has the capability to create new opportunities in areas where DP shuttle vessels have not previously operated, and where environmental conditions restrict traditional offshore ship-to-ship transfers.”
