HOUSTON ABS has issued guidance on sanitizing and decontaminating marine and offshore facilities exposed to COVID-19.

Response Measures to COVID-19 for the Marine and Offshore Industries provides best practice guidelines on issues such as how to prevent an asset from becoming contaminated; how to maintain it in a sanitized state; how to decontaminate an asset when there is an onboard COVID-19 case; and considerations for the choice, use and disposal of cleaning and disinfecting products.

The best practices are said to apply to drilling units, production installations and other offshore units, as well as commercial and naval vessels.

“Determining how to protect crews while continuing operations in complex environments with unique requirements, where decontamination is considerably more challenging than for assets on land,” said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.

“For instance, improper application of detergents and disinfectants can degrade structural materials or weaken coatings designed to protect structures.”

ABS has devised the guidance based on independent governmental and commercial sources.

Last week ABS Group Consulting introduced a Restart Risk Model designed to help commercial and public organizations return workers safely back on site following COVID-19 stay-at-home directives.

This is designed to help hip owners maintain their operations with enhanced working practices in the ‘new normal’ business environment.
