ABU DHABI, UAE – Fugro and Saudi Arabia’s KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) have jointly inaugurated the KAUST - Fugro Center of Excellence for Marine Technology.
This will provide training in ROV operations and hydrographic survey as part of the Saudization program.
KAUST’s facilities, on the shore of the Red Sea, are designed in part to address the challenges associated with mapping the Red Sea, much of which remain unexplored due to extreme depths, temperature, and salinity.
According to Jean M.J. Fréchet, KAUST’s senior vice president for Research, Innovation and Economic Development, the co-operation will also help advance development of subsea research technologies.
In addition, Fugro will contribute technologies to assist collection of data and samples from previously inaccessible sites, and it will also establish an ROV Training Academy (ROVTA) at the KAUST Coastal and Marine Resources Core Laboratory.
At the sole facility of its type in Saudi Arabia, Fugro will train Saudi students to become ROV pilots and engineers for work in industry and marine research, with Fugro’s ROVTA in Abu Dhabiassisting with training.
