STAVANGER, Norway – TCO says that it has developed and installed an API 19CI-qualified FNR (Fall through protection, Non-return, Retrievable) injection valve for an unnamed Norwegian offshore operator.

The installation is said to be the first for an API 19CI-qualified retrievable injection valve on the Norwegian continental shelf.

SLB supported the development, providing mandrel and running tools in both the API test and field trial, allowing TCO to increase the side pocket mandrel in order to comply with the enhanced rating requirements, first issued in 2019, for chemical injection devices intended for use in the global petroleum and natural gas industry.

This includes criteria for specifying, selection, design verification, validation testing, manufacturing, quality control, testing, and preparation for shipping of chemical injection devices.

The 10,000-psi, 150°C-rated FNR valve allows retrieval and change-out of the valve or Anti-U-Tube mechanism during the well’s lifespan. This saves the potential costs of recompleting a well due to chemical injection valve (CIV) failure, TCO said.

The FNR injection valve has a pressure rating of 10,000 psi and can operate at temperatures up to 150 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for various applications.

The technology is based on TCO’s proven permanent CIV from TCO with the back pressure retention mechanism was re-designed to meet the requirement of 5,000 psi Anti-U-Tube prevention.
