MOSCOW – Rosneft believes it has a new oil field discovery in the Laptev Sea offshore northern Russia.
The Tsentralno-Olginskaya-1 well was drilled from the shore of the Khara-Tumus Peninsula on the shelf of Khatanga Bay.
Three core samples taken from subsurface depths of 2,305-2,363 m (7,562-7,752 ft) revealed high oil saturation dominated by light oily fractions. This indicates a discovery, with the resource potential growing as drilling continues.
Core sampling also continues, with hydrocarbon saturation of the core samples analyzed to date confirming the geological model developed by Rosneft’s team.
The company secured the license on the eastern Russian arctic shelf, and horizontal drilling of Tsentralno-Olginskaya-1 started on April 3.
Water depths in the Khatanga license area, which is north of the Krasnoyarsk Region, reach 32 m (105 ft). Rosneft’s studies of its acreage in the Laptev Sea since 2014 have identified 114 promising oil and gas-bearing structures, with potential resources across the entire seas of 9.5 billion toe.
