BØMLO, NorwayEidesvik Offshore has a memorandum of understanding with Aker BP and Alma to investigate use of Alma’s fuel cell technology.

This could be retrofitted to two offshore support vessels, the Eidesvik-owned Viking Lady and Aker BP-owned NS Frayja (currently under Eidesvik’s management), with the option to extend to other vessels.

The agreement is part of Eidesvik and Aker BP’s joint technology project Retrofit, which targets emissions reductions from existing supply vessels.

According to Eidesvik, hydrogen and ammonia are seen as the best two zero-emission fuel candidates for shipping, with ammonia likely to be the best option for longer voyages, such as North Sea supply routes, where ships must carry large amounts of fuel.
