BØMLO, Norway – Eidesvik Offshore has a memorandum of understanding with Aker BP and Alma to investigate use of Alma’s fuel cell technology.
This could be retrofitted to two offshore support vessels, the Eidesvik-owned Viking Lady and Aker BP-owned NS Frayja (currently under Eidesvik’s management), with the option to extend to other vessels.
According to Eidesvik, hydrogen and ammonia are seen as the best two zero-emission fuel candidates for shipping, with ammonia likely to be the best option for longer voyages, such as North Sea supply routes, where ships must carry large amounts of fuel.
