ZAANDAM, the Netherlands – Spliethoff has contracted KenzFigee to supply pipe handling gantry cranes for two newbuild multi-purpose DP2 B-type offshore construction vessels, currently being built at the Mawei Shipyard in China.

The two electrically-driven cranes are designed to move pipes from a pipe handling platform to a position in the cargo hold and vice versa.

Among their special features are an anti-sway and semi-automatic movement system, allowing the cranes to operate unmanned in the cargo (enhancing safety and production during offshore operations); a redundant power supply for improved reliability; and an integrated interface with the hatch cover system to provide more loading capacity.

Both cranes, which are also removable, will have an SWL capacity of 140 t, a width of 19.18 m (63 ft) and a weight of 168 t. The length of the cranes is adjustable for handling pipe sections of 12.5, 18, and 25 m (41, 59, and 82 ft) and the systems can be configured to handle multiple pipes.

KenzFigee will build, assemble, and test the cranes in Zaandam, after which they will be disassembled for transportation to China for installation on the B-type vessels in early 2021.
