NIGG, UK — Sumitomo Electric has begun construction of a new subsea transmission cable factory in the Port of Nigg, northeast Scotland.
This will supply components to connect renewable energy production facilities to the UK’s grid.
During the inauguration, SSEN Transmission announced it had chosen Sumitomo and cable installation partner Van Oord as the preferred bidders for the Shetland 2 525-kV HVDC subsea power cable project.
Shetland 2 will provide a 330-km connection between Shetland off northern Scotland and the mainland to transport 2 GW of renewable electricity to the UK grid.
