MILAN, Italy Prysmian Group will supply the submarine inter-array cable system for Equinor’s Empire Wind project offshore New York.

The company is responsible for the design, supply, and storage of about 150 km (93 mi) of 66 kV XLPE-insulated inter-array cables. These will transmit twice the current industry standard ensured by 33 kV systems, according to Prysmian.

Construction of the cable system’s power cores is set to begin this month. The system will be fabricated in Montereau, France, and Nordenham, Germany. Completion is expected in the summer of 2022 and the final installation in 2023 or 2024.

Empire Wind is an 816-MW offshore wind project in New York state about 32 km (20 mi) south of Long Island. Each turbine is expected to have an installed capacity of 10-15 MW.
