NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, UK – Royston has completed engine overhaul work on Stena Drilling’s 228-m (748-ft) long ultra-deepwater drillship Stena Carron.
Five Royston engineers undertook the 48,000-hour overhaul of a Wartsila W16V16 diesel generator. The job was completed as the ship sailed from the Caribbean to a position offshore Guyana.
The company inspected and refurbished the crankshaft main and thrust bearings, main bearing jacks, connecting rods, piston rings, crowns and skirts. It also installed new big end bearing shells.
The engineers also replaced OEM overhauled turbocharger cartridges, repaired the turbocharger exhaust manifold, and upgraded intermediate gears, camshaft gears, and the speed governor.
Built in 2008, the Stena Carron is a sixth-generation harsh environment, multi-purpose dynamically positioned drillship. It is capable of drilling to depths up to 10,000 ft (3,048 m). It has managed pressure drilling capabilities, a wireless unit tower, and enhanced drilling fluid storage.
