SHARJAH, UAELamprell is progressing construction of two newbuild jackup rigs in Saudi Arabia that were subcontracted through the IMI joint venture, the company said in its latest results statement.

First steel has started for both rigs, with cantilever fabrication under way on rig one along with layout of the hull.

The UAE-based group has seen a steady flow of new refurbishment work from its clients, notably from ADNOC, although rig deployment has slowed with completed projects undergoing additional scopes as they await commissioning.

As for wind farm construction, the jackets were loaded out last month for the Moray East project offshore eastern Scotland. Plus, Lamprell has now secured a contract to fabricate 30 jackets for the Seagreen wind farm, its third project in the offshore wind sector, with first steel already cut.

At mid-year, the company was bidding for $1.3 billion of renewables work, with numerous bids in Europe and Asia, and strong interest now emerging from the US.

The scale of the US offshore renewables projects is significantly larger than Lamprell’s current and previous experiences in Europe, the company added.

Recently the company signed an exclusive deal with simulation technologies developer Akselos to market digital twins. This should allow Lamprell to offer engineering simulations for optimized design, delivery and maintenance of wind farm foundations, jackup rigs, FPSO modules and other offshore facilities.

Other digital solutions at the group’s UAE yards include deployment of adaptive robotic welding, installation of facial recognition technology, digitizing a proprietary QA/QC quality management system, and implementing smart non-destructive testing techniques.

Lamprell is also working with Injazat, said to be the Middle East’s leading digital developer (and backed by Mubadala Investment Co.) to progress various digital ventures including asset integrity and enhanced fabrication efficiencies.

Some of these initiatives are being piloted at the yards.
