Ocean Winds (OW), the joint venture between EDP Renewables and ENGIE, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte to support development of an offshore wind energy industry in Brazil.
Since 2020, OW has registered five offshore wind energy project proposals with environmental agency IBAMA for a total capacity of 15 GW in the states of Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul.
The new agreement involves an exchange of knowledge concerning essential elements for the growth of Brazil’s offshore wind industry, including regulatory frameworks, strategies for the local supply chain and community engagement.
OW is seeking to develop R&D opportunities that comply with current laws and regulations, investing in advanced technologies and promoting collaboration with academic institutions and industry partners.
In the Moray Firth offshore northeast Scotland, the last of the 60 SG 14-222 DD wind turbines have been installed at OW's 882-MW Moray West wind farm.
Each turbine, equipped with the “Power Boost” capability, has the capacity to generate 14.7 MW. Moray West should be fully operational next year.
Siemens Gamesa managed pre-assembly of the 60 turbines, with its factory in Hull, northeast England, manufacturing the 180 turbine blades.
All turbine components were marshalled at the Port of Nigg from where Cadeler’s heavy-lift vessel Wind Orca collected them for the installation. Siemens Gamesa’s technicians on land and onboard the vessel have overseen each installation and are presently commissioning the turbines.
