Saipem has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Geolog and Ignis H2 Energy to investigate options for the development of geothermal energy, including offshore.
Milan-headquartered Geolog provides geological formation and drilling solutions. Houston-based Ignis H2 Energy specializes in geothermal resource acquisition, exploration and development.
Geothermal energy exploits the natural heat within the earth's sphere. Saipem’s goals include development of next-generation geothermal energy systems, offshore geothermal energy and the conversion of oil and gas wells.
Under the MoU, the three companies will perform joint studies on unconventional geothermal energy, such as terrestrial heat sources that are hard to access, as well as offshore geothermal energy, particularly in the Mediterranean basin.
Saipem will lead the feasibility study of geothermal plants, assessing currently available technical solutions and identifying potential technological gaps.
Geolog and Ignis will focus on the assessment of geological formations and drilling solutions, and the analysis of geothermal resources availability.
Saipem brings experience in the development of conventional geothermal projects and wells, both in Italy and globally, since the 1970s, alongside a track record in offshore, drilling and construction of floating facilities.
