TGS assessing potential for renewable energies offshore Cabo Verde

Oct. 7, 2024
A pre-feasibility study will be performed for the electric interconnection of the Cabo Verde Islands offshore West Africa.

4C Offshore, a division of TGS, will perform a pre-feasibility study for the electric interconnection of the Cabo Verde Islands offshore West Africa, in collaboration with RTE International and Consultores de Engenharia e Ambiente (COBA).

Cabo Verde's program, supported by the government of Luxembourg’s Development-Climate-Energy (DCE) initiative, seeks to increase use of renewable energy and strengthen energy security on the islands.

The study will assess the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of interconnecting the islands for developments potentially including wind, solar and green hydrogen projects.

Key components will include evaluating the potential for offshore and onshore renewable energy integration; the feasibility of pump storage systems and battery storage; the environmental impact of interconnection; and the long-term economic benefits for the islands, particularly through reducing their reliance on fossil fuels.

This study will form part of Cabo Verde's Energy Master Plan (2018-2040), which targets generating 50% of the islands’ electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
