Community Offshore Wind, a joint venture between RWE and National Grid Ventures, has appointed Fugro to conduct geotechnical investigations of their offshore lease area in the New York Bight.

They plan to develop the area with 3 GW of offshore wind energy.

Last year Fugro performed site characterizations over the full 510-sq-km lease area and potential export cable corridors, delivering a preliminary earth model of geophysical and environmental conditions to support the conceptual design.

The new geotechnical investigation will update this model via seabed sampling and ground condition testing to assist engineering of the wind turbine foundations.

Work is underway using two vessels: one is focused on seabed sampling and downhole in situ testing, while the other is undertaking seabed cone penetration tests.

In the latter case, Fugro is deploying its SEACALF MkV Deep Drive system, said to provide fast data acquisition and up to 40% lower emissions than other technologies.

VirGeo, the company’s cloud-based geodata engagement platform, is enabling near-real-time data analysis, Fugro added, to help optimized field operations.
