ESSEN, Germany — RWE has signed a letter of support with the Port Authority of A Coruña in Galicia, northwest Spain, to help scale up port capacity to support the nation’s floating offshore wind targets.
Spain’s government aims to have 3 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2030, according to RWE, and plans to launch its first tender in the Canary Islands this year.
The company and the Port Authority will examine how to transform an area at the Port of A Coruña into a logistics hub for marshalling, assembly and launching of components for commercial-scale floating offshore wind projects.
Martín Fernández Prado, executive chairman at the Port Authority, said the deepwater port’s location on the main international maritime routes further supports the potential investment in these processes for floating substructures and mooring systems.
RWE is looking to develop, construct and operate floating offshore wind projects more widely, and it has secured a commercial-scale floating wind lease off the Californian coast.
It is also supporting the DemoSATH Demonstrator 2 miles off the Basque coastline of northern Spain. DemoSATH was the first floating wind turbine connected to the Spanish grid.
Recently, the company formed another partnership with Ferrovial to jointly develop, construct and operate floating offshore wind farms offshore Spain’s coasts, and RWE is also exploring floating opportunities elsewhere in Europe, the US and the APAC region.
