COPENHAGEN, DenmarkCopenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) plans to develop more offshore energy island projects globally.

It is currently working on about 10 energy island projects in the North Sea area, the Baltic Sea and in Southeast Asia.

These are large-scale offshore energy hubs, designed to enable the scaling up that will likely be needed for deploying the next generation of offshore wind parks globally.

According to the company, they combine existing, proven technologies in an innovative way and at a much larger scale, allowing for a cost-efficient build-out and integration of offshore wind.

Among the main potential benefits are a substantial reduction in power transmission costs, the possibility of large-scale offshore green hydrogen production, and related synergies between power and hydrogen production.

“Today, the challenge for offshore wind is less about building the incremental offshore wind farm, but more how to integrate large-scale offshore wind energy into the global energy systems,” said Jakob Baruël Poulsen, managing partner and founder of CIP. “We see energy islands as a key tool in solving this challenge and realizing the ambitious offshore wind targets across the globe.”

CIP says it is launching Copenhagen Energy Islands, a new development company dedicated to developing energy islands globally with backing from Nordic, European and North American investors.
